Direct payments on housing benefit in doubt

It sparks a major u-turn by the Department for Work and Pensions – who in its Universal Credit White Paper, released in November, acknowledged the importance of “protecting rental income for social landlords”.

At a British Property Federation conference this month, Lord Freud revealed that direct payments would be phased out of the social housing sector and used as a “matter of exception where required” rather than as a matter of course.
