Expect fewer landlords to accept tenants on benefits

Along with journalists, estate agents and lawyers, landlords are amongst the most disliked groups of individuals. But as the British Property Federation (BPF) points out, being a landlord is just another small business. So why is the government being so awkward about paying landlords direct? After all, housing benefit is awarded in order that people who are out of work have somewhere to live. Why should landlords be exposed to non-payment of the rent by benefit claimants who pocket the rent and don’t pay the landlord?
