Housing chief outlines case for direct housing benefit payments

As part of its welfare overhaul the Government wants to roll working-based benefits into a single Universal Credit and pay it direct to the tenant. This, it argues, would give tenants greater responsibility.

The Government's Welfare Reform Bill reaches report stage at the House of Commons today. Conservative MP for Hove, Mike Weatherley has submitted an amendment to the Welfare Reform Bill enabling tenants to be able to choose who the housing cost element of the new universal credit should be paid to – themselves or their landlord.
