The Department for Work and Pensions, which announced the policy alongside a raft of changes to the housing benefit system today, said the changes will allow more council tenants to secure tenancies or stay in existing homes.
The British Property Federation called the move a “Del-boy” benefit policy that would see council staff having to “wheel and deal” with local landlords to reduce their rent in return for the comfort of getting paid directly.
Welfare reform minister Lord Freud has previously urged landlords to meet the government half way by lowering the rents in exchange for a return to the system of direct payments, where rent is paid directly to the landlord by the local authority, rather than by the tenant. Read More:
