Ministers to consider paying housing benefit direct to landlords

The Welfare Reform Bill, which is currently being debated in the Commons, includes a provision for the housing element of the new universal credit, which will combine all in-work benefits into a single payment. The government proposed that this is paid directly to tenants, leading to concern from landlords about arrears increasing.

Last night, Tom Greatrex, MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, said a housing association in his constituency is ‘concerned about the payment of the housing element of universal credit and the changes that are being made to the current arrangements on direct payments’. Read More:
