Property leaders lobby coalition on housing benefit payment

LSL Property Services's latest buy-to-let index shows that unpaid rent owed to residential landlords totalled £276m across the UK in December, the highest total for a year. The proportion of all UK rent that was unpaid or late by the end of December rose from 9.7% in November.

The British Property Federation (BPF) blamed the increase in rent arrears on the previous government’s removal of the direct payment of housing benefit to landlords.

The BPF claimed there is growing evidence that the issue was dissuading landlords from letting homes to housing benefit claimants, restricting the number of homes available to rent and upping the pressure on cash-strapped councils to find accommodation for those on council waiting lists. Read More:
